State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carmen Ayala will visit “old Plainfield-area stomping grounds”

State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carmen Ayala will visit two schools in and near District 202 serving District 202 students from 9-11:30 a.m. Monday, October 3, 2022 to bring attention to successful programming serving all students.

“We are so flattered and honored by Dr. Ayala’s visit,” said District 202 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Glenn Wood. “Of course, we’re not surprised by her interest since she is familiar with the good work we do, and in fact helped lead the way to our current success years ago,” Wood said.

She will first visit several classrooms at Grand Prairie Elementary School around 9 a.m., Grand Prairie has had a successful ELL program for several years.

She will then visit the Wilco Area Career Center – a unique vocational educational program serving 1,339 students from 11 Will County schools. 

Ayala started in 2005 in District 202 as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.

She left District 202 in 2012 to become Superintendent of Berwyn District 98, where she is credited for improving academic performance among lower-performing schools.

She was named State Superintendent in 2019.

Additionally, Dr. Ayala served as the director of School Improvement and Programs at Community Consolidated School District 300. 

She also served as an assistant superintendent, director of Bilingual Services, and teacher in Aurora East School District 131. She began her career in education as a teacher in Chicago Public Schools.

Dr. Ayala has held positions on numerous boards and committees, including the Illinois State Board of Education Bilingual Advisory Council, Illinois Women in Educational Leadership, Illinois Resource Center, and the Illinois Professional Review Panel for Evidence-Based Funding. 

She served as an executive board member on the Latino Policy Forum, where she championed equitable funding and increased resources for English Learners. 

Dr. Ayala has recently visited several schools that have demonstrated academic improvement, especially in non-traditional areas like dual language programing.
